Dizziness vs. Vertigo: Understanding the Difference

Dizziness vs. Vertigo: Understanding the Difference

Dizziness and vertigo are often used interchangeably but refer to two distinct sensations. As a chiropractor, understanding the differences between dizziness and vertigo is crucial in helping patients receive the appropriate care plan for their symptoms. Let’s explore these two terms, the types of dizziness, and how chiropractic care can support those experiencing these uncomfortable sensations.

What is Dizziness?

Dizziness is a broad term that refers to a feeling of lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or imbalance. People experiencing dizziness may describe it as feeling “off-balance,” “woozy,” or “lightheaded.” Dizziness can stem from various factors, including dehydration, low blood sugar, anxiety, or certain medications. Occasionally, it can result from issues in the neck muscles and joints, known as cervicogenic dizziness.

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo, on the other hand, is a more specific sensation. People with vertigo often feel as though they or their surroundings are spinning or moving, even when standing still. This spinning sensation can be quite intense and can be caused by issues within the inner ear. The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which happens when small crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and disrupt the balance signals to the brain.

Differentiating Between Dizziness and Vertigo

One of the first steps in managing dizziness or vertigo is to identify the cause. Your chiropractor will take a thorough health history and physical examination to diagnose the specific reason for each of your symptoms.

Chiropractic Care and Options

Chiropractic adjustments can help improve joint and muscle function. Additionally, chiropractic care can enhance balance and proprioception, which may benefit patients experiencing instability.

If the vertigo is due to BPPV, chiropractors may use the Epley Maneuver for treatment of this condition. The Epley Maneuver can help move the inner ear crystals back into place to alleviate spinning sensations.
