Stretch Before You Cheer: A Sens-ational Guide to Staying Injury-Free During the NHL Playoffs
It’s official – playoff fever is back in Ottawa! For the first time in what feels like forever, the Ottawa Senators are heading to the postseason, and the city is buzzing with excitement. Whether you’re watching from the edge of your couch, joining the crowd along Sens Mile, or leaping to your feet after every goal (and we hope there are a lot of them!), it’s important to cheer responsibly.
At CURAVITA Health Group, we want to help you jump, shout, and celebrate without pulling a muscle or waking up sore the next day. That’s right – playoff cheering is a full-body activity, and just like any sport, it deserves a little warm-up, cool-down, and a whole lot of love for your nervous system.
Your Sens Playoff Prep Plan:
Pre-Game Warm-Up: Loosen Up Before You Light the Lamp
Before puck drop, take a few moments to get your body in cheering shape:
- Neck Rolls: 5 in each direction. Loosen up for all those “Did you see that?!” head turns.
- Shoulder Circles: Forward and backward, 10x each. For high-fiving your fellow fans!
- Side Reaches: 10 each side to stretch your torso for those celebratory arm raises.
- Calf Raises & Marching in Place: 30 seconds each. Get your lower body ready for spontaneous jumping when the Sens score.
Mid-Game Nerve-Calming Breathing (Especially During OT…)
Let’s face it—playoff hockey is stressful. Deep breathing helps calm the nervous system and keep you grounded.
Try this simple box breathing technique:
- Inhale for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
- Exhale for 4 seconds
- Hold again for 4 seconds
Repeat 4-6 times during TV timeouts or nail-biting shootouts.
(We can’t guarantee it’ll help the Sens win, but it might keep your blood pressure in check.)
Post-Game Cool Down: For the Morning After the Mayhem
The final buzzer sounds (hopefully after a big W!), and you’ve given your living room a cardio-level celebration. Don’t skip the cooldown:
- Standing Hamstring Stretch: Hold 30 seconds on each side to avoid tightness after those victory jumps.
- Wrist and Finger Stretches: Essential after gripping your foam finger or remote a little too tightly.
- Spinal Twists (Seated or Standing): 10 each side to unwind after hours of edge-of-your-seat action.
- Gentle Forward Fold: Breathe and stretch to calm your nervous system down for a good night’s rest.
Bonus: Don’t Forget These Playoff Tips!
- Hydrate: Especially if your “watch party beverage” of choice isn’t water.
- Use proper lifting technique: That case of snacks isn’t going to carry itself!
- Book your recovery appointments: We’re here to help with any playoff-related strains (cheering is a contact sport, after all).
So Sens Army – get loud, get limber, and cheer like a champion. And remember, if playoff season leaves you feeling a little stiff or sore, your CURAVITA team has your back (and neck, and knees).
Go Sens Go!
