Chiropractor Tips for a Pain-Free Vacation!
Planning a vacation is exciting, but for those with back or neck pain, travelling can sometimes be a challenge. From long hours sitting on planes or in cars to walking for miles to explore new sights, there are plenty of opportunities for discomfort to sneak in. As chiropractors, we want you to enjoy every moment of your trip, so here are some top tips to keep your back and neck pain-free on vacation.
1. Pack Supportive Footwear
Before you even set off on your trip, make sure to pack good, supportive footwear. Vacations often mean lots of walking, so don’t bring shoes that could lead to blisters or discomfort. Avoid flip-flops, which lack support, and opt for sandals with arch support, like Birkenstocks, for lounging by the pool or beach. For sightseeing or long strolls, a good pair of walking or running shoes with proper support will help prevent foot, knee, and back strain. Breaking in your shoes before the trip will also help avoid any surprises!
2. Bring a Travel Neck Pillow
If you’re taking an overnight flight or a long road trip, consider bringing a neck travel pillow. Sleeping in an awkward position can lead to neck pain or stiffness, which is the last thing you want on vacation. A neck pillow will support your spine and help you rest comfortably, so you don’t wake up with a crick in your neck. Avoid falling asleep tilted against the window or armrest without support; it can lead to uncomfortable mornings.
3. Move Around Frequently
Sitting for extended periods can strain the lower back and increase discomfort, especially for those prone to low back pain. On planes, in cars, or even during bus tours, make a point to get up, stretch, and walk around as often as possible. If you’re on a long flight, aim to stand up and move every hour or so. Remember, a changing posture is the best posture—keeping your body in motion will help prevent stiffness and reduce the risk of flare-ups.
4. Practice Proper Lifting Techniques
Lifting luggage can put unnecessary strain on your back if done incorrectly. When lifting bags in and out of the car, or storing them in overhead bins, remember to engage your core and hinge at the hips. Avoid twisting your spine when lifting, and bend at the knees if necessary. Using proper lifting techniques can prevent back injuries and keep you feeling good throughout your trip.
