Make Mother’s Day Special

Mother’s Day is around the corner

The special day in May is fast approaching. The special day that we all stop and take notice of the special women in our lives. Notice the women who have been there for us through thick and thin. Mother’s Day is one of those celebrations we should take time out of our busy lives to recognize. After all, without Mom, we would not be here today.

Mothers brought us into this world. They love us, guide us, support us and are always there to lend a helping hand or give us a piece of sound advice. They can be our best friends and sometimes we may not always see eye to eye. But one thing will never change, they will always be Mom and we love them for it.

North American Mother’s Day

In Canada and the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. This day in dedication to all mothers in North America dates back to 1908. Anna Jarvis of West Virginia held a memorial ceremony to honour her late mother and all Mothers. Ms. Jarvis never had any children herself, but she wanted to honour her late Mother’s wishes of having a day just for Moms. Following the success of her first Mother’s Day, Ms. Jarvis campaigned to see her holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased toward male achievements, Anna started a massive letter-writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honouring motherhood.

By 1912, many states had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Anna Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson officially signed a measure establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. You can find the International Mother’s Day Shrine now standing in Grafton, West Virginia marking the first official observance of Mother’s Day.

Flowers for mom

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide in at least 50 countries. More people purchase fresh flowers and plants for Mother’s Day than any other holiday except for Christmas. Mother’s Day has become the 3rd largest card-sending holiday and is toted as the busiest day of the year for restaurants. And did you know there are more phone calls made on this day than on any other day of the year?

As a child, it was so easy to surprise Mom. We would create all sorts of masterpieces we knew she would love and we painted, glued and colored our way into her heart. However, as we get older, it can become more difficult to truly surprise Mom. Mother’s Day is the one day of the year that is specially dedicated to Moms everywhere, so wouldn’t it be nice to show your Mother love with something other than the usual card and flowers?
