Shockwave Therapy for Running Injuries
Did you participate in the recent Ottawa Race Weekend? Are you a runner currently dealing with a nagging injury? Are you receiving different forms of treatment but aren’t getting the results you’re looking for? Shockwave could be a potential treatment for you!
Shockwave therapy has emerged as an effective, non-invasive treatment option for various chronic orthopedic injuries. This modality, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, is becoming more common in physiotherapy and rehabilitation settings. Shockwave therapy is useful in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions, primarily those involving connective tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and fascia. Occasionally, persistent conditions do not respond to traditional forms of treatment, and having the option of shockwave therapy allows the physiotherapists at CURAVITA to have another tool in their toolbox.
Treatment for Running Injuries
Shockwave therapy has been found to be effective for two of the most common injuries related to running. This includes plantar fasciopathy (also known as plantar fasciitis) and Achilles tendinopathy (also known as Achilles tendonitis). These are chronic conditions that can stop responding to manual treatments and need another approach. At your first visit, the physiotherapist (PT) will evaluate your injury to confirm that you’re an appropriate candidate for shockwave therapy. The PT will educate you about your condition and what you can do in addition to shockwave therapy. This includes things such as activity modification, specific exercises, and assessing any other contributing factors such as running form, muscle imbalances, etc. Following treatment, you may experience temporary soreness for 1-2 days as the delivery of sound waves to the tissue stimulate a mild inflammatory reaction to restart the body’s healing response naturally. Upon completion of each session, you can return to most of your usual activities shortly afterward.
Shockwave therapy is currently at the Glebe location of CURAVITA Health Group. If you’re interested in learning more and experiencing this treatment for yourself contact us at CURAVITA.
