Physiotherapists: Exercise Specialists?

Did you know that exercising regularly has a lot of health benefits? Your physiotherapists will tell you that to achieve those benefits, adults aged 18-64 should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more. It is also beneficial to add muscle and bone-strengthening activities using major muscle groups, at least 2 days per week. But more physical activity provides greater health benefits.

Where to get started?

There are some things you can start doing now to change your habits and start moving! For example, you can park further in the parking lot to have a little walk. Take the stairs if you can instead of the escalators. You can also start by walking 30 minutes a day and increase the intensity as you go. Any physical activity that you enjoy counts!

Can fitness level be measured?

The answer is YES. There are some basic and specific tests to measure your fitness level. Physiotherapists are well-trained to assess you and prescribe a specific exercise program to achieve your goals. They can work with you and your medical team to implement exercise protocols to reduce or prevent chronic health conditions and keep you moving well.

Are physiotherapists exercise specialists?

Many people are confused about who to see for a prescription of a specific exercise program to fulfill their needs. Some may have heard about kinesiologists or personal trainers. So the question is, who should we see, physiotherapists or kinesiologists? These two professions work together a lot when it comes to rehab. As for physiotherapists, they work more with patients who have lost mobility and strength due to injuries or illnesses. They use hands-on therapy, specific exercises, stretches, and more to help patients get better. They can also prescribe long-term exercise programs for the patients to get going even after.

On the other side, kinesiologists are healthcare professionals who use exercises and movement education to help patients. A kinesiologist focuses on studying human movement while physiotherapists treat patients who suffer from reduced physical fitness due to accidents, illness, injury, and aging.
