Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, safe treatment for tendons and muscle dysfunctions. According to some clinical studies, shockwave therapy has an improvement rate of 91% for numerous conditions.

How does it work?

Shockwave Therapy involves creating a series of low-energy acoustic wave pulsations that are applied using a gel to the injured area. The purpose of this therapy is to trigger the body’s natural healing response. It creates a local inflammatory response that accelerates the healing process in the body by stimulating the healing metabolism and enhancing blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue.

Are there any side effects?

During a Shockwave treatment, you may experience some discomfort, but the intensity of the machine will be adjusted accordingly to keep you comfortable. Following the treatment, and for the ensuing 24 hours some patients experience temporary soreness, tenderness or swelling. The good thing is that it is perfectly safe to return to most of your regular activities.

How many treatments will I need?

The exact number of sessions depends entirely on the nature of the injury and on the individual. This specific therapy has a cumulative effect, so more than one treatment is typically needed to maintain the relief. Some people respond well to the treatment and others may need more sessions. Usually, we notice a difference within 3 to 5 sessions. To read more about Shockwave therapy click here.

Am I a good candidate for Shockwave?

Shockwave Therapy is highly effective in the treatment of common injuries such as frozen shoulder, jumper’s knee, hamstring pain, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, myofascial trigger points, hallux rigidus, heel spurs, and more.

Our CURAVITA physiotherapists will conduct an initial assessment to determine if Shockwave Therapy would be beneficial to your treatment and to determine if you are a good candidate. They can then administer the treatment which typically lasts for approximately five minutes.
