May is National Physiotherapy Month!

Did you know? May is National Physiotherapy Month! While the research is clear that receiving the right care at the right time after an injury can make a substantial difference in your recovery, not everyone is familiar with physiotherapy.

So what is physiotherapy? According to the Ontario Physiotherapy Association, “Physiotherapy is a recognized, evidence-based health profession that plays a key role in the health of individuals and populations across the care continuum. Physiotherapy has been proven to be effective in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic conditions, the prevention of injury and disability, and in promoting health and wellbeing.”

So, what do physiotherapists do? According to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, “Physiotherapists are primary health care professionals with a significant role in health promotion and treatment of injury and disease. They combine their in-depth knowledge of the body and how it works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability.”

Following a comprehensive assessment, physiotherapists develop an individualized treatment plan based on your current injury or condition, previous medical history and lifestyle. A home exercise program is always part of your treatment plan to ensure you regain the function that will allow you to engage in activities of daily living, work duties, and sports. In addition to exercise, physiotherapists are skilled in hands-on manual therapy. This may include various forms of joint mobilizations and soft tissue release techniques. Tools such as therapeutic ultrasound, electrotherapy, acupuncture or dry needling, among others, can be used to complement manual therapy and exercises.
