Getting Back to Your School Routine

September 10, 2019 | Chiropractic, Fall, Massage, Physiotherapy, Wellness

It’s that time of year again! The air is crisper, the leaves are starting to change colours, and the store aisles are lined with backpacks and notebooks. Back to school season is an exciting time to build new habits and routines. After a well-deserved vacation, you’re likely feeling refreshed and motivated to start off on a good foot. Here are our 5 tips to make the most of that energy and get settled into a routine that will set you up for success:

Don’t Skimp on Sleep

Sleep schedules aren’t just for children! Maintaining a regular sleep schedule from the beginning of the school year will make it easier to remain well rested when life gets busier and more stressful. Getting into the routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day may sound like an impossible feat, but it is the best way to avoid feeling groggy and tired in the morning. Evaluate what a typical week is like for you and decide on a schedule that makes sense for you and gives you the amount of sleep you need to feel your best. Gradually shift your current schedule in 15-minute increments each week until you achieve your goal. Avoid taking naps that are longer than 30 minutes so you don’t disrupt your routine. Consistency is important, so try not to vary your sleep schedule by more than 1 hour throughout the week. Remember, you cannot “bank” your sleep hours by sleeping in on weekends.

Food is Fuel

Avoid the infamous “Freshman 15” by always having wholesome food and healthy snacks available at home and on-the-go. This is important so you don’t find yourself wandering around campus when you’re hungry – that’s when you’re most likely to not make the healthiest decisions. Work Smart

Work-life balance may feel impossible to achieve at times, but with some strategic planning you can manage your stress levels and prevent burn-out. Assess your priorities and make sure your schedule has time for play (activities you enjoy). When it’s time to study or work on an assignment, make sure you’re 100% focussed (put your phone away!). When it’s time for a break, completely disconnect from your work so that when you go back to the books, your mind is fresh and ready for more. Talk to your professors, teaching assistants, or students who have taken the course previously to determine the most efficient way to study for each subject.

Move More

It’s easy to let exercise fall by the wayside as you get busier. Find an activity you enjoy and schedule it in. Make it a non-negotiable part of your routine. Look for ways to sneak in exercise, like a quick walk in between lectures. Cardiovascular activity stimulates endorphin release, also known as the “feel-good hormone”, which helps to manage stress. So get your heart rate up with the exercises you enjoy!
